Mosquito Anatomy Ontology

This ontology of anatomic stuctures of mosquitoes has been developed and maintained in obo format. It has been submitted to OBO (Open Biomedical Ontologies). OBO lists a set of ontologies that can be directly browsed.

The Mosquito Anatomy ontology was based on the book "Taxonomist's Glossary of Mosquito Anatomy" by Ralph E Harbach and Kenneth L. Knight (Plexus Publishing, Inc., Marlton, NJ, ISBN 0-947548--00-6).

Specific anatomical structures can be searched using our browser either by name or by terms belonging to the structure's definition. For example, you can look for "tergite" by searching either for the appropriate term or the contents of the definition. The search outputs will be slightly different (e.g. synonyms will be listed in the first mode). Clicking the Term ID in the output will provide you with specific information on your search query, as well as (a) figure(s) in which the respective structure is shown. Click on the figure for higher magnification. These figures have been reproduced electronically, by permission, from the book mentioned above.

We are currently working on additional mosquito-related ontologies (e.g. hoist-seeking and blood-feeding behaviour, mosquito-parasite interactions) that will be presented in these pages soon.
