Fourth International Meeting on

"Molecular and Population Biology of Mosquitoes and Other Disease Vectors"

19 - 26 July 2009

Kolymbari, Crete, Greece

Information for accepted participants

Organizing Committee:

This meeting follows the organization of three Workshops on similar topics, held at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in the summers of 2003, 2005 and 2007. The objective of this year's workshop remains the same, i.e. to bring together an international group of scientists to present their findings on genome organisation and expression, population biology and ecology of arthropod disease vectors. The development of new tools and strategies (e.g. post-genomics, transgenesis, release of GM arthropods, etc.) for the control of disease through the control of parasite transmission and their impact on society will be one of the main issues to be discussed. This meeting is now being organized as part of the EMBO Conference Series.

The meeting will cover a broad area of topics while maintaining a small size in order to foster close interactions between the participants. It will last one week with morning (9:00-1:00 pm) and evening sessions (5:00-9:00 pm). The dates indicated reflect the arrival/departure days, while the sessions will last from Monday morning till Saturday evening. About 120 participants will be accepted by vote of the Organizing Committee, and as a rule, only one participant will be able to attend from any single lab. Exceptions will be made, by decision of the Organizing Committee, for exceptional postdocs or graduate students upon recommendation of their respective advisors. It is probable that applicant numbers will exceed the available number of slots. Every attempt will be made to make sure that the attendance is representative of the research community worldwide. The entire application process will be done electronically.

All participants will be required to present a talk of about fifteen minutes on their work. If more than one person attends from the same lab, the additional participants will be asked to present a poster.

Registration is possible since January 1, 2009 and the deadline for receipt of applications is March 10, 2009. For logistical purposes the Organising Committee will adhere strictly to those deadlines. Please note that participation at the meeting is limited to the individual accepted. A registration fee of 700.00 Euro must be remitted upon acceptance. Local expenses in Crete (full board, double room occupancy) will be covered from that fee. Participants are expected to finance their travel to Kolymbari. We expect that we will be able to support, in part, participants from DECs. For them, local fees will be waived and their travel will be reimbursed in part, depending on the availability of funds. Participants from DEC countries of the BEM group (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey) will only be considered for support if funds are still available after requests from other DEC-participants have been satisfied.

Please distribute this message to your colleagues at your, and other institutions.

Accepted applicants will be notified by April 5, 2009.

Note that July is high season for tourism in Crete (and all over Greece). Thus, if accepted, please book your travel as soon as possible. If you plan to spend additional days in Crete, it may be a wiser decision to do so before, rather than after the meeting. We will provide accepted participants in due time with hints and help concerning their travel to/from Crete.
