Registration and payment
Acceptance to the meeting is strictly limited to the individual accepted.
A registration fee of 700.00 Euro must be remitted upon acceptance.
This fee includes local expenses in Crete (full board, double room occupancy).
Accompanying persons (in a double room) will have to pay a fee of 500.00
Euro. Please let us know as soon as possible (not later than May 15)
whether you intend to be accompanied by a non-participating person with
you. Very few single rooms are available, which will be given on a first-come-first-serve
basis for 950.00 Euro.
Participants are expected to finance their travel to Crete. Contrary
to previous meetings, no grants-in-aid for partial travel support will
be available for scientists from disease-endemic countries due to the
complete lack of outside funding. We are sorry for this, but due to
lack of funds, no exceptions will be made.
The registration fee will have to be paid to the following account (by July 1):
Account Holder: Christos LOUIS & Georgia HOULAKI
Name of Bank: Bank of Piraeus
Account Number: 5755-017451-081
SWIFT code: PIRBGRAA
IBAN number: GR9401727550005755017451081
Reference: Mosquito meeting
Please make sure, when transferring the money, that we get the NET amount,
i.e. charges and fees to you, not the recipient! In case that you prefer
to pay by checque (made out to Christos LOUIS), increase the amount
by 10 Euro (i.e. 710E) to cover the bank fees. Our apologies, but payment
by credit card is not possible, neither now, nor later
during the meeting.
Please, make sure that your name and institution are mentionned in the bank transfer, there is no way to
credit your account otherwise. Because the Greek banks are sometimes "strange" and they may not tell us who
paid what, we would appreciate your sending me a copy of your payment as an e-mail attachment so that we can
book everything correctly in the meeting's database.
The Meeting
Venue and dates: The EMBO Workshop will take place 13 - 20
July 2005 at the Orthodox Academy of
Crete at Kolymbari, Crete; the dates indicated are the arrival/departure
dates, i.e. the sessions will start in the morning of July 14 and finish
in the evening of July 19. Wireless connection to the internet
is available at the meeting.
Extra days: If anyone of you plans to be there a day earlier, we'll
be able to provide accommodation at the Academy (85 Euro extra per night
per person) in the "same" room that he/she will use for the rest of
the meeting. Rooms, though, are limited, so please let us know as soon
as possible, and certainly not later than June 1.
Sessions: overhead, slide projector and computer-based presentation
(preferred mode!) set-up will be available. For PowerPoint or Keynote
presentation, bring your slides on a CD or a stiffy/stick/watchmacallit
so that we can transfer them to the harddisk of the local computer.
Please contact us ON TIME in case you have special needs (e.g. video,
etc.). At this time it looks like we'll have about 20 minutes available
for every speaker's presentation. Please prepare your talks accordingly,
as the chairs of the sessions will have strict orders to interrupt you
after that time. Also don't forget that every accepted participant
is expected to speak!
Abstracts: One page long abstracts have to be submitted as
e-mail attachments by June 15. Please keep this deadline as this
will enable us to fix the programme. The abstracts will become available
on the Web. In case you want, you can bring handouts (~90) to be distributed
before the sessions. Bear in mind that we can not take care of copying
your handout.
Travel
Arrival to Kolymbari
Kolymbari, where the Orthodox Academy of Crete is located, is about
25 km west of Chania, Crete's second largest city. This is the nearest
port of entry (both air and sea).
By air
Chania (Airport code CHQ) can be reached by air from Athens (40
min.). Please be careful to not confuse Chania with other Greek cities/airports,
such as Chios. There are 9 flights from Athens on July 20, operated
by Olympic Airlines and
Aegean Airlines.
In addition, several charter companies fly to Chania from many West
European cities. Careful: there is no bus connection from the
airport to ...anywhere! You will have to take a taxi either to the centre
of Chania or, preferably, directly to the Academy in Kolymbari (~30-40
Euro). Best (and cheapest) thing to do is to share a cab with up to
3 additional people (if you recognize people you know in your flight).
Alternatively, one can fly to Heraklion (Airport code HER; ~13 flights/daily
from/to Athens 40 min., in addition to regular and charter flights from
all over Europe) and then take the "overland" bus (called KTEL in Greece)
to Chania/Kolymbari (3 hours ride, leaves from close to Heraklion Harbour
every 60 min., last bus at about 7 p.m.). Again, given the low prices
of taxis in Greece, one can use a cab from Heraklion airport to the
Academy (~2 hrs.) , which should cost less than 150 Euro.
By sea
Chania has daily sea connection with Piraeus via an ANEK
Lines' ferry boat (overnight, about 10 hours). The bay of Souda serves as the port of Chania.
Taxis from the port of Souda to the Academy cost about the same as from the airport
(approximately 30-40 Euro). As is the case for air travel, Heraklion
can also be used to arrive to Crete. In addition to ANEK Lines, Minoan
Lines also serves Heraklion daily (overnight, about 8 hours); during
the peak season Minoan Lines ferries also leave Piraeus at noon arriving
in Heraklion at 6 p.m.
Transportation from Chania (town) to Kolymbari
Best and fastest way is by taxi (~20-30 Euro). A KTEL bus is the other
possibility (price less than 5 Euro). The busses leave from the central bus station in the
centre of the city. You take the bus to Kasteli, and ask to get off in Kolymbari (~30 min.).
From the drop-off place you walk (nice!) about 20-30 minutes to the Academy, which is
located at the exactly opposite end of the village!
